Adult Development and Personality

Exploring the relevance of Personality in Adult Development while self-referencing and also looking at David Bowie and Keith Richards

Hosted by Dr Angelina Bennet and joined by Karen Ellis

Overview
Adult development theory suggests that as we develop through the different stages, we become less defensive, more self-aware, develop more emotional intelligence, and more able to deal with complexity and ambiguity. The issues addressed in development work and coaching (and even the way it is done) are likely to be different depending on the stage of development.

To add to this, there are various ways of looking at personality, and one of the most commonly used models is the Myers-Briggs. This model suggests that there are 16 broad personality types, and, although individuals of the same type may behave and appear very differently on the surface, they are likely to have similar motivations, attitudes, perceptions and drivers.

Could combining developmental stage with personality type help coaches and consultants tune into clients’ needs and understand what is really important to them, and add more value to each session?

Outline
In this three-hour enquiry workshop, we will look at the theories of personality types and adult development – how they are similar and differ, and how might the two combine in coaching. We will also explore how the personality can show up differently at different stages of development and consider how individuals may respond to personality development coaching at different stages of development.

Hosted by Dr Angelina Bennet and joined by Karen Ellis, co-author of Upgrade (for which Angelina advised on personality) there will be lots of opportunity to explore differing views and experience. And hear about Keith Richards and David Bowie!
