Ego and the construction of value, money and work

Ego and the Construction of Value, Money and Work

Hosted by Simon Cavicchia

Ego formation and maturation is a central thread in the research and literature of vertical development. This is the latest in a series of webinars exploring ego formation and relaxation in the context of vertical and transformational learning.

Ego and ego structure are inextricably entwined with how we construct what we consider to have value in ourselves, others and the world. In this webinar we shall focus on the relationship between ego and how we socially construct the meanings of money and work and our relationship to them. Understanding these constructs and the core egoic preoccupation of “self-preservation” which lies at the heart of ego structure and its functioning can offer valuable insights into our and our clients’ relationship to money, anxieties, habits and routines.

Understanding the relationship between ego, self-preservation, value, money and work also serves to illuminate a number of wider social, economic and organisational processes. It can help to understand the psychological underpinnings of free market capitalism as an ideology and the problematic nature of unfettered growth and resource extraction as evidenced in the climate emergency.

In this webinar we will:

  • Learn the basic structure and functions of the ego and the human personality.
  • Understand the nature and effects of the core preoccupation with “self-preservation” at the heart of personality structure and how this shapes meaning and constructs about value, money and work.
  • Explore how these constructs inform feeling, thinking and action.
  • Understand how this “inside” of the personality shapes the “outside” of ideology, belief systems, institutions and organisations
  • Experience a range of exercises to explore our individual constructs and relationship to value, money and work.
  • Consider together implications of any insights gained for our practice as coaches and consultants working in the field of vertical development and transformational learning.
