“‘Working with Ian really helped me work through the key issues in developing my business plan, deploying my teams, and working more productively with my colleagues’
Paul Johnston, Director Data & Analytics, Deloitte

Ian creating developmental inquiry based Coaching and Supervision relationships, with leaders, teams and coaches, working across organisational systems

For more than a decade Ian has worked closely with senior leaders and their teams, acting as a supportive, yet appropriately challenging, systems focused coach with whom they can work through the complex issues and challenges that arise in times of organisational or personal growth, transition and change. Acquired over many years his key coaching skill is to help his clients to create for themselves time and space in which to make key decisions in otherwise stressful times and situations.

He began developing this approach whilst working as a detached youth worker in two of Belfast’s paramilitary controlled housing estates during the N Irish ‘Troubles’, before moving into the world of finance where he worked for many years - eventually leading the executive benefits consulting practice in an Irish ‘Big 4’ firm. Several years in this role spent in developing his understanding and practice of what is now called ‘leader-coaching’ inspired him to move away from consulting and establish a coaching and coach supervision practice, initially as a sole practitioner, but predominately in partnership with Siân Lumsden.

As a coach and coach supervisor he has worked with a wide range of clients from across both public and private sectors, and is currently the Association for Coaching (AC) Area Chair for North West Europe.

Ian holds an MA in ‘Coaching Leaders through Transition and Change’, with a major emphasis on evolving team coaching as a dynamic and effective approach to leadership development. He also holds a PGC in Coach Supervision and has worked extensively as an external supervisor of organisational internal coaches in both the private and public sectors.

Ian brings a reflective approach into coaching and supervision conversations; creating and preserving a psychologically safe space in which leaders and teams can identify and engage with their personal and systemic leadership challenges.

Community of Practice

Harthill has created and sustains a collaborative group of coaches, consultants and facilitators in a Community of Practice,

which supports our own transformation and the transformation in individuals, teams, organisations and society. Each person who completes the LDF Authorisation is included in the Community and enriches our work.

Developmental Events

Orchestrated and choreographed by Rebecca Stevens, the Community is beginning to buzz with ideas, connectivity, sharing of experiences, co-inquiring into aspects of our work and the field. Harthill has created and curated a range of developmental Events which serve this purpose and some are also available to those outside the Community of LDF Authorised Practitioners.

Collective Inquiry Groups

Harthill has also launched a series of Collective Inquiry Groups - Community Inquiry, Developmental Inquiry, Practice Inquiry. We have also launched FrameChangers - like a book group for sharing and discussing any books, articles, videos or indeed any material that has shifted our frames of reference, triggered a new line of thinking or developmental idea.

Wisdom Council

Under the guidance of Dr Stephen Duns, we have also initiated a Thought Leadership space, with a Wisdom Council providing guidance and oversight, a planned annual Conference at which we will share new thinking, and a supportive group that will facilitate the research and studies that can lead to the publication of articles in our field.

Our Collaborators

Harthill seeks to attract those in the field with whom there is a "resonance", and we are proud to have many Collaborators who are aligning with us, sharing their experiences and contributing directly to our work
