"The one important thing I have learned over the years is the difference between taking one's work seriously and taking one's self seriously. The first is imperative and the second is disastrous."

Dame Margot Fonteyn

Stephen is at the heart of our thinking at Harthill, leading our thought leadership and our work in Australasia

For the Serious

Stephen is an experienced executive, coaching psychologist and consulting adviser. His experience includes several Chief Executive Officer and general management roles in small through to very large organisations in Australia and the UK. Stephen has been involved in consulting assignments in the fields of leadership, strategy and change in the UK, Europe, USA and Australasia. Stephen is an adjunct Professor of Business Leadership at the Australian Graduate School of Leadership at Torrens University.

At Harthill Stephen leads our work in Australasia and thought leadership.

Stephen has a Doctorate in Business Leadership, Master of Business Administration, Bachelor of Letters (Psychology), Bachelor of Arts (Philosophy) and Diploma at the Australian Institute of Company Directors. Stephen is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, Research Fellow at Deakin University and Fellow of the Australasian College of Health Service Managers. Stephen is also an accredited Analytic Network Coach and Master Practitioner of NLP.

Stephen is also an active volunteer with recent roles as President/Director annecto, Director of Australian Graduate School of Leadership, Chair/Director of Merri Community Health Services, Chair of Austin Health’s Human Research Ethics Committee, President and Chairman of the Board of Parkinson’s Victoria and Parkinson’s Australia and President/Director of JOY 94.9 community radio station.

For the Curious

One of the core elements of vertical development is "heat experiences". If it’s heat experiences you want, Stephen’s your guy! He loves to provoke people out of their comfort zone to a space of deep learning and growth.

Outside work Stephen spends his time with his husband, Shan, between Australia and the Philippines. Sadly Covid-19 has put a stop to that for a while and they have to be content walking their three dogs in the bushlands of Australia.

Stephen nourishes his soul with as much time as possible in nature and uproarious laughter, primarily at himself and also at the world.

An avid reader, Stephen has just started turning his mind to writing, with his first book to be published soon.

Community of Practice

Harthill has created and sustains a collaborative group of coaches, consultants and facilitators in a Community of Practice,

which supports our own transformation and the transformation in individuals, teams, organisations and society. Each person who completes the LDF Authorisation is included in the Community and enriches our work.

Developmental Events

Orchestrated and choreographed by Rebecca Stevens, the Community is beginning to buzz with ideas, connectivity, sharing of experiences, co-inquiring into aspects of our work and the field. Harthill has created and curated a range of developmental Events which serve this purpose and some are also available to those outside the Community of LDF Authorised Practitioners.

Collective Inquiry Groups

Harthill has also launched a series of Collective Inquiry Groups - Community Inquiry, Developmental Inquiry, Practice Inquiry. We have also launched FrameChangers - like a book group for sharing and discussing any books, articles, videos or indeed any material that has shifted our frames of reference, triggered a new line of thinking or developmental idea.

Wisdom Council

Under the guidance of Dr Stephen Duns, we have also initiated a Thought Leadership space, with a Wisdom Council providing guidance and oversight, a planned annual Conference at which we will share new thinking, and a supportive group that will facilitate the research and studies that can lead to the publication of articles in our field.

Our Collaborators

Harthill seeks to attract those in the field with whom there is a "resonance", and we are proud to have many Collaborators who are aligning with us, sharing their experiences and contributing directly to our work
